PlayStation released a sizzle reel trailer today highlighting many of the announced games players that can expect in 2024. While the release windows of many of them were already known — some like The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown launch in just a couple of weeks — two games did just have their release windows confirmed in this video. The games in question are Konami’s remakes of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Silent Hill 2.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, so it makes sense for Konami to commemorate that by releasing a remake. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater was first announced at a PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, and we got our first look at in-engine footage at an Xbox Partner Preview that October. It seems like it will be a fairly straightforward reimagining of Hideo Kojima’s classic, but Konami has been mostly quiet about this game. As such, it’s nice to get affirmation that it’ll launch this year.

That isn’t the only remake Konami has on the docket, either. It’s working with Bloober Team, the developer behind games like The Medium and Layers of Fear, to reimagine the PlayStation classic Silent Hill 2 in the vein of Capcom’s Resident Evil remakes. Konami has not wanted to show much about this game since revealing it in October 2022, which Bloober Team has apologized for. Because of that, Konami’s willingness to confirm the game’s release year is significant.

Hopefully, Konami will soon provide updates on each of these games, as well as more specific release dates or windows.

I was a Silent Hill 2 remake skeptic until I played its first 3 hours
Pyramid Head wields a weapon in Silent Hill 2.

When Konami first announced that it was remaking the horror classic Silent Hill 2, I was an immediate skeptic.

The original game is one of those wholly unique creative visions that just felt impossible to replicate. How could a studio intentionally capture the stilted voice acting or jerky animations of the original, aesthetic decisions that gave that game an off-kilter unease that made it so special? I especially had reservations about The Medium developer Bloober Team taking up that task, as it's a studio whose games have occasionally felt like they were trying a bit too hard to recreate an atmosphere born from PS2-era tech limitations.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake might divide retro and modern RPG fans
An RPG party stands in a throne room in Dragon Quest 3: HD-2D Remake.

After a long wait, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is finally coming to PC and consoles -- and yes, that’s its official title. The NES revival launches on November 14 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. An HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 is set to follow in 2025.

Ahead of its release date reveal during today’s Nintendo Direct, I got a deeper look into all the changes coming to the game, as well as a bit of hands-on playtime. Along with making some key quality of life tweaks, the remake also features some radical changes to story and structure that will bridge it to the first two Dragon Quest games (both of which happen after 3, chronologically). Those modern touches are paired with very faithful decisions that leave the core combat of the original surprisingly untouched – a move that may divide purists and newer RPG fans.
Modern meets retro
First revealed in 2021, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remaster is a project from Octopath Traveler 2 studio Team Asano and Artdink. We already knew that it would give an NES classic a fresh look thanks to Team Asano's signature HD-2D art style, but details on the game have been scarce over the past few years. That seemed surprising for a remake like this, but it turns out that the project is much more ambitious than originally advertised.

Silent Hill 2’s long-awaited remake will arrive just in time for Halloween
The Silent Hill post office shrouded in fog.

The Silent Hill 2 remake from Bloober Team got two new gameplay trailers and a release date announcement at PlayStation's State of Play presentation and a Silent Hill Transmission stream directly after. Fans will be able to return to the town of Silent Hill on October 8 on both PS5 and PC.

The first new trailer highlighted a mix of gameplay and cinematics from the game, primarily focusing on James and Angela. This was the first real look at the new actors and cinematic direction for the game, while gameplay sections were still highly edited. The trailer did show off many of the game's iconic monsters, including nurses and armless figures, as well as a few of the notable locations, such as the hospital and prison.
